Description
Our reading group on the works of Thandika Mkandawire invites anyone interested in African development, heterodox economics, and critical perspectives on policy-making. Mkandawire, a Zimbabwean/Malawian economist and social scientist, is renowned for his critique of mainstream development policies and for advancing alternative approaches that consider the unique socio-political landscapes of African countries.
His work addresses central questions on the state, economic policy, and development, challenging orthodox narratives that have historically underpinned international development programs. Mkandawire advocates for “thinking beyond the mainstream.” He critiques the reductionist views that characterize African states as “failed” or “fragile” and instead explores the nuances of state-building, governance, and economic development in ways that resonate with local realities. His emphasis on the role of the developmental state in Africa invites readers to reimagine development frameworks that acknowledge the agency of African leaders and institutions.
This reading group dedicated to Mkandawire’s work will also provide an opportunity for collective reflection on the pathways toward sustainable and inclusive development in Africa.
