Description

Title: Repositioning Early Career Legal Scholars for Emergent Technology and Business Models

Concept note: The relevance of law to the study of economics, and economic development cannot be overemphasized. This assertion finds validity against the backdrop that business and economic activities are only legal to the extent that they find expression within extant laws.

Therefore, the roles of persons trained in the art of law comes to the fore. These persons with academic and professional qualifications to render services as researchers, law teachers, advocates, solicitors, arbitrators, etc are not economists in the strict sense. However, they are one of the core drivers of economies, and economics.

However, in the discharge of their services, these professionals are encumbered with some foundational challenges. These problems are often inherent in their basic training, for example, Legal training is significantly traditional, it is largely built on references, and precedents.

Further challenges are found in ambiguous, or stale statutory provisions, hence law, and legal frameworks may be stagnant.

On the converse, businesses respond to the dynamics of societies. Successful businesses, professionals, same as profound economic models, are those who had in yesteryears projected and prepared for the future with near accuracy.

However, many researchers, law teachers, advocates, solicitors, arbitrators, etc particularly those in the formative stages of their career tend to practice their trade from the view point of their training; practices immersed in tradition, and detached from current, and projected business and economic realities.

Invariably, the services they render become inadequate to industry emerging demands. The primary area of deficiency is the application of law to emerging and projected economic thoughts and business models, specifically technology and globalisation.
The challenge spiral-balls into stunted career growth for many of these early career professionals which ultimately negatively impacts their general development.

Furthermore, the identified unavailability of required expertise in the adequate quality and quantity, impacts negatively on national economic development. Consequently, new and positive economic development that supports sustainable development is encumbered.

Therefore, a young scholars workshop is proposed to address the identified anomaly.
