Description

The real estate market is in centre of major events in the 21th Century: the 2007/2008 global financial crisis that emerged in the American housing market, and had widespread effects across globe, including the Euro zone crisis and a global wave of fiscal austerity; and the current global need for restructuring urban built environment and infrastructure to adapt to the climate change, guiding to strategies such Green New Deal. In this front, responses such as green land value tax and tax incentives for the adoption of blue and green infrastructure in new buildings requires sophisticated mass appraisals. In between these two major events, the COVID-19 pandemic led central banks to cut interest rates, which were expected to have effects on real estate prices, and families saw their needs for housing changing in the face of lockdowns, home-office and confinement experiences.

This two-days workshop will bring together senior experts and early-career researchers to explore key topics related to the study of real estate cycles, the attempts to boost Green New Deal in each country, and how to model and finance these initiatives.

The YSI Urban and Regional Economics, Financial Stability and Keynesian Economics Working Groups, in partnership with the Italian Society of Appraisal and Valuation (SIEV) invite Master’s and PhD Students and Early Career Researchers to apply for the Workshop: Building the Future: Navigating Real Estate Cycles and Green New Deal Strategies, a side event to be held before the SIEV 2025 Conference in Naples, Italy. Through engaging presentations, discussions, and collaborative sessions, attendees will evaluate emerging patterns in real estate, discuss how sustainability goals interact with market forces, and propose new frameworks for equitable and environmentally conscious housing solutions. Senior scholars will offer mentorship and insight, sharing the latest research while encouraging dialogue around the future of real estate in a rapidly evolving world.

We invite abstracts related to the following themes:

  • Real estate cycles: real estate prices and fluctuations, relationship between macroeconomics and real estate, financial stability, real estate indexes, housing affordability, appraisal approaches, and land value taxation
  • Climate change, Green New Deal, green land value tax, adaptation strategies, urban planning and sustainable housing solutions
  • Real Estate Trends: real estate development in the face of crisis, remote working, suburbanization, migration, housing crisis, etc.

Young scholars who are committed to interdisciplinary research, especially bridging a gap between topics, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Application Process

Step 1: Master’s and PhD Students and Early Career Researcher (5 years from PhD) are invited to submit an extended abstract (between 500 and 1000 words) of their research before February 20, 2025.

Abstracts will be selected based on clarity, relevance, originality, and the outline of the research question, method, and (preliminary) results. We will inform applicants chosen by end-March and subsequently invite them to proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: The selected young scholars are expected to submit a full working paper version before April 29, 2025. Only participants who submit a full paper will be able to join the initiative.

Financial support

During the abstract submission process, you can indicate your need for financial support. For selected participants the YSI will cover two-night accommodation in shared apartments or shared hotel rooms and partial travel support (co-financing with own resources is expected). The workshop is free of charge.

Please note that admission to the pre-conference workshop does not extend towards admission to the main SIEV annual conference. We do, however, encourage workshop participants to see this as an opportunity to attend the main SIEV conference following the workshop. There are two separate submissions (link to the conference application).
