Description
The purpose of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is to bring together member countries each year to set ambition and responsibilities, and to identify and evaluate climate action. The 21st COP (COP21) led to the Paris Agreement, which mobilised global collective action to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels by 2050, and to take action to adapt to the impacts of climate change already occurring. This year, COP29 will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 November to 23 November 2024.
COP29 calls for “Enhance ambition and enable action”. “The first pillar — to “enhance ambition” — combines key elements to ensure all parties commit to ambitious national plans and transparency. The second pillar — to “enable action” — reflects the critical role of finance, a key tool to turn ambition into action and reduce emissions, adapt to climate change and address loss and damage.”
As a YSI community, we believe in the importance of this process and that we can contribute from our experiences and studies. In order to learn and contribute to COP29, we invite you to join us at the YSI COP for the UNFCCC COP29 workshop, which will take place in Warsaw, Poland from 4 to 7 November in the run-up to COP29. The workshop will welcome YSI members – between 10 and 15 scholars – to discuss the key issues of COP29 through discussion dialogues, site visits and a simulation session where members will play the role of negotiators.
This project is a collaboration between the Finance, Law and Economics Working Group, the Sustainability Working Group and the Philosophy of Economics Working Group. By participating in this workshop, selected scholars will deepen their knowledge in their fields of study, have the opportunity to meet peer-leading researchers and practitioners in an interdisciplinary environment. The goal of the workshop is to write up some recommendations report from the YSI perspective and produce a concrete document that will be presented by a group of YSI scholars attending COP29 in Azerbaijan.
A limited number of participants will receive financial support from YSI for their participation. This support will include: a partial travel stipend to Warsaw, Poland; full accommodation with breakfast for three (3) days – from 4 November to 7 November; lunch on 5 and 6 November; and transportation to a farm visit on 6 November. We expect participants to arrive on 4 November and depart on 7 November.
The selection process will take place after the deadline of the October 6th.
