Description

YSI-Session Workshop on New Developmentalism: Macroeconomic Development for the Global South

The New Developmentalism (ND) is a theoretical framework that has been developed by prominent economists in Brazil since the early 2000s. It has been developed to comprehend the growth and development dynamics of middle-income countries, in particular, Latin America. The theory, based largely on classical development economics and post-Keynesian economics, has brought important contributions to the field of political economy and development macroeconomics. It focuses on the fiscal and current accounts and on five macroeconomic prices which the market is unable to keep ‘right’.

The 7th Workshop on New Developmentalism will be an event composed of lectures, conferences by a keynote speaker, discussion panels with senior scholars and panels of paper presentations on themes related to economic development in emerging countries – in particular, through the theoretical approach of New Developmentalism. In this way, it seeks to stimulate debate and understanding of possible unconventional strategies for catching up in developing countries. More specifically, it seeks to stimulate debate, production, and the strengthening of a network of researchers on macroeconomic and development theory from an unconventional approach.

Main speakers confirmed:

  1. Aloizio Mercadante, President of BNDES
  2. Martin Guzman, Former Minister of Economy of the Republic of Argentina
  3. Luiz Carlos Bresser-Pereira, Former Minister of Economy of Brazil and Emeritus Professor at FGV.

This year, the Complexity Economic WG and the Latin American Working Group of YSI-INET, jointly with CND-FGV, are pleased to invite you to participate in our YSI Session and to submit your manuscript for the YSI sessions for article (work-in progress) presentation. We encourage submission that broadly falls within the topics of the conference (see below), such as:

  • Political economy of new developmentalism (developmental capitalism x liberal capitalism, the developmental state)
  • How to expand New Developmentalism reach to overcome current development challenges?
  • Why and how to manage the five macroeconomic prices (exchange rate, wage rate, profit rate, interest rate, and inflation) to promote economic development?
  • Why are the exchange rate and the current account so important in the investment function?
  • Extensions of new developmentalism (green growth strategies, economic policies to reduce inequalities).
  • Analysis of the development strategies of countries, particularly Latin America.
  • Analysis of global south countries’ development strategies, particularly Africa and Asia.
  • Empirical research that tests new-developmentalist hypotheses and models.
  • Models and empirical research focused on the relation between climate change and structural change.

The YSI session will be composed of one discussion panel with senior scholars and multiple session for young scholars to present their work and receive comments and feedback from senior scholars.
