The Economic Consequences of Covid-19 in Mexico

Following up the two previous webinar on the Economic Consequence of Covid-19 in Latin America, the Economic Development WG and the Latin America WG are happy to announce yet another episode of this series. In this meeting, we will host Professor Juan Carlos Moreno Brid on the effects of the crisis in Mexico. Juan Carlos Moreno Brid is currently Professor at the Economics Faculty in UNAM, Mexico. Previously he was Associate Director and Research Coordinator of the UN’s office In Mexico of ECLAC (Economic Commission For Latin America And The Caribbean) and Research Associate at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies in Harvard University. Finance in developing countries and COVID crisis: What’s going on in Mexico

Following up the previous webinars on the Economic Consequence of Covid-19 in Latin America, the Economic Development WG and the Latin America WG are happy to announce yet another episode of this series. In this meeting, we will host Professor Noemi Levy Orlik on the financial effects of the crisis in Mexico. Noemi Levy Orlik is currently a professor at the Economics Faculty at UNAM, in Mexico. She has been working at UNAM for more than 35 years teaching in the bachelor, master and PHD Economic programs. She has been awarded with Premio Universidad Nacional en Docencia en Ciencias Económicas y Administrativas, 2014 (most important of UNAM teaching award, in her field), the Reconocimiento “Sor Juan de Inés de la Cruz”, (for the most outstanding women researcher in her university, 2019) and she belongs to the Mexican National Research Council (CONACYT-SNI). She specializes in issues regarding financial macroeconomics, monetary theory and policy, Latin American development studies, and international monetary analysis. Her research activities are extensively published in international and Mexican journals and editorial houses. COVID-19 and the Unbearable lightness of being of the economist

UPDATE: the webinar had to be postponed. It will now happen Thursday, July 9th, at 12:00 ET. In the next edition of the Economic Consequences of Covid-19 in Latin America series, we take a theoretical perspective on the pandemic with Esteban Perez Caldentey. He will reflect upon the Mainstream interpretation of the Coronavirus and its implications for the economic theory. Esteban Pérez Caldentey holds a Master (1989) and PhD (1996) from the New School for Social Research (NY, USA) and is currently Chief of the Financing For Development Unit at the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile. He also teaches a course on Alternative Economic Models with Applications to Latin America at the University of Santiago de Chile (USACH) and taught Post Keynesian Economics at the University of Chile. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Investigación Económica (UNAM, México), the International Journal of Political Economy (USA) and the Review of Keynesian Economics (USA) and also a co-editor of the World Economic Review.

The fragility of the Colombian economy in times of coronavirus

Our next episode of the webinar series will host Prof. Diego Guevara from Bogotà, who will share us some thoughts on the fragility of the Colombian economy in the wake of the pandemic. Diego Alejandro Guevara Castañeda is Assistant Professor in Macroeconomics at the National University of Colombia (Universidad Nacional de Colombia, UNAL), from which he also holds a Ph.D. in Economics. He carries out research mainly in Heterodox Macroeconomics, Financialization, SFC Modelling and History of Economic Thought. He was visiting professor at the International Business Administration Europa-Universität Viadrina, visiting student at the University of Limerck and he worked for the Colombian Ministry of Communications. In addition, he taught also at the Universidad Catolica de Colombia, the University of Sabana and the Pontifical Javeriana University. The Political Consequences of Covid-19 in Latin America

In the next episode of the Webinar series, we turn to the political consequences of the crisis in the region from a political economy perspective. Latin America was already facing slower economic growth and popular discontent when the Covid-19 hit the continent. Policy responses vary across countries in the region without following a clear political or economic ideological pattern. Thus, although the economic consequences are likely to prevail, the political implications are less clear. International financial markets' responses to different policies in the region and their influence in economic policymaking before, during, and after the health crisis are also open questions. To help us connect these dots between economic volatility and political instability in the region, we will host a Webinar with Daniela Campello. Daniela Campello is a Professor at FGV/EBAPE in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She teaches courses and conducts research on international and comparative political economy, focusing on the consequences of economic internationalization in domestic politics and democracy in emerging economies. Formerly she a was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Politics and at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. Daniela’s work appears in top political Science Journals, and she is the author of "The Politics of Market Discipline in Latin America: Globalization and Democracy" (Cambridge University Press 2015), and co-author of “The Volatility Curse” (forthcoming, CUP 2020).

Innovation and spontaneous policies during the COVID19 crisis in Costa Rica

In this new episode of the Webinar series on the consequences of COVID-19 in Latin America we will host professor Jeffrey Orozco Barrantes, who will discuss with us about Costa Rica's policy responses and challenges for innovation. Jeffrey Orozco Barrantes is an economist from the University of Costa Rica. Master's degree in Economic Policy with emphasis on international trade from the National University and a PhD in Planning and Development with emphasis on Innovation Economics from Aalborg University in Denmark. Professor at the International Center for Economic Policy for Sustainable Development, CINPE, at the National University. Currently, he has a research and teaching agenda on innovation systems and sustainable development. He has participated as a consultant or as a researcher in multiple projects both with national entities and with international organizations and universities. He has been general director of the International Centre for Economic Policy for Sustainable Development at the UNA. He has also been Executive Director of the Permanent Commission of Self-Management Cooperatives. He served as advisor to cooperatives both in CONACOOP and INFOCOOP. He has a wide range of publications both in books and in national and international journals. He is currently the coordinator of the General Secretariat of Globelics (Global Network for Economics of Learning, Innovation, and Competence Building Systems)

Environmental crisis and the Pandemic in Latin America

The YSI Webinar series on the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis in Latin America has already discussed the economic, political and social dimensions of this crisis. In the next episode, we turn to the environmental crisis in the context of the pandemic in Latin America. The current development model in Latin America has led to an increasing rate of degradation of natural resources and pollution, besides the climate change consequences. The images of the burning Amazon are just the tip of the iceberg of a large number of environmental degradation, such as water and soil pollution and extreme weather events. Besides, climate change tends to exacerbate structural problems in under-developed countries, such as social vulnerability and the external constraint. The current health crisis has reinforced the urgent need for State coordination to tackle world-wide humanitarian and economic crises that have been at the heart of the environmental crisis we were already in. In this context, the ECLAC/UN initiative called “The Big Push for Sustainability” tries to bring forth the developmentalist idea of State-led coordination of investments in order to foster a green development. In order to discuss the connections between the COVID-19 crisis and the environmental crisis, the next episode of our webinar series will deal with the implications of the COVID-19 crisis to the debate around green development policies. In this meeting, we will host Camila Gramkow. She holds a PhD in Climate Change Economics from the University of East Anglia (UK) and has more than 10 years of experience dealing with sustainable development. She is currently an Economic Officer at the ECLAC/UN working with the Big Push For Sustainability initiative.
