Pope Francis’ 3 New Economic Questions Webinar: The Value of Uselessness

In this webinar session the panel discusses their view on the third new economic question posed by His Holiness Pope Francis:*"What place does the current economic system give to uselessness, that is, to beauty?"* The panel will include:Rob Johnson is the President of the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET), which he co-founded with George Soros, William Janeway, and James Balsillie in 2009. From the outset, the founders envisioned INET as a globally engaged network that could lead the evolution of economic thought toward the interest of people and the planet. Mary Evelyn Tucker is the co-founder and co-director of the Forum on Religion and Ecology at Yale University with her husband, John Allen Grim. Tucker teaches in the joint Master's program in religion and ecology at Yale between the School of the Environment, and the Divinity School. She also has an appointment at Yale's Department of Religious Studies. She has authored and edited close to 20 volumes and has published hundreds of articles. She is a pioneer in the field of religion and ecology. Doris Sommer is the Director of the Cultural Agents Initiative at Harvard University, and Ira and Jewell Williams Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures and of African and African American Studies. Her academic and outreach work promotes development through arts and humanities, specifically through “Pre-Texts” in Boston Public Schools, throughout Latin America and beyond. Pre-Texts is an arts-based training program for teachers of literacy, critical thinking, and citizenship. Sommer has enjoyed and is dedicated to developing good public school education. She has a B.A. from New Jersey's Douglass College for Women, and Ph.D. from Rutgers University. John Fullerton is an unconventional economist, impact investor, writer, and some have said philosopher. Building on and integrating the work of many, he is the architect of Regenerative Economics, first conceived in his 2015 booklet, “Regenerative Capitalism: How Universal Patterns and Principles Will Shape the New Economy.” After a successful 20-year career on Wall Street where he was a Managing Director of what he calls “the old JPMorgan,” John founded the Capital Institute in 2010 where his work reflects the rising evolutionary shift in consciousness from Modern Age thinking to Integral Age thinking. The Capital Institute is dedicated to the bold reimagination of economics and finance in service to life. Guided by the universal patterns and principles that describe how all healthy living systems that sustain themselves in the real world actually work, the promise of Regenerative Economics and Finance is to unlock the profound and presently unseen potential that is the source of our future prosperity and the reason for hope in our troubled times. The webinar will entail a 10 minute presentation from each of the panel members followed by an opportunity for questions and answers with audience and between the panel members. In this webinar session the panel discusses their view on the second new economic question posed by His Holiness Pope Francis:*"Taking into account that the administration of household goods requires its rules, its laws: what could be those laws that put the economy at the service of fragility? What should the relationship between economics and politics be like to ensure that everyone has what is necessary to live a fulfilling life?"* The panel will include:Rob Johnson is the President of the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET), which he co-founded with George Soros, William Janeway, and James Balsillie in 2009. From the outset, the founders envisioned INET as a globally engaged network that could lead the evolution of economic thought toward the interest of people and the planet. Mariana Mazzucato (PhD) is Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at University College London (UCL), where she is Founding Director of the UCL Institute for Innovation & Public Purpose (IIPP). She received her BA from Tufts University and her MA and PhD from the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research. Her previous posts include the RM Phillips Professorial Chair at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at Sussex University. She is a selected fellow of the UK’s Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS) and of the Italian National Science Academy (Lincei). Juan Maquieyra is Director at the Escuela Politica Frattelli Tutti. Previously, he was the President of the Housing Institute of the City of Buenos Aires, responsible for ensuring access to adequate affordable housing for all citizens. In this role, Maquieyra has made the upgrading of slums a priority and is doing it with an innovative bottom-up approach. Before this, he was the Social Cabinet Coordinator of the City of Buenos Aires. He also worked for the Ministry of Education at the Buenos Aires City Government, as the Chief Negotiator of the teachers’ collective bargaining agreements. Peter Barnes is an innovative thinker and entrepreneur whose work has focused on fixing the deep flaws of capitalism. He has written numerous books and articles, co-founded several socially responsible businesses (including Working Assets/Credo), and started a retreat for progressive thinkers and writers (The Mesa Refuge). The webinar will entail a 10 minute presentation from each of the panel members followed by an opportunity for questions and answers with audience and between the panel members. Pope Francis’ 3 New Economic Questions Webinar: Toward a Common Home

In this webinar session the panel discusses their view on the first new economic question posed by His Holiness Pope Francis:*1. If the origin of the word economy refers to the administration of household goods, one might ask: who today administers the goods our Common Home? What bond unites those who administer those assets and those whose assets are administered? * The panel will include:Rabbi Sergio Bergman is the former Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development of Argentina; and is currently the President of The World Union for Progressive Judaism. Rabbi Bergman graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry at the University of Buenos Aires. His research provides a modern perspective of Integral Ecology from an Ecumenical Political view. Reverend Sister Helen Alford, O.P., graduated in manufacturing engineering from the University of Cambridge, where she was also awarded a PhD. She is a religious sister of the Dominican Sisters of Saint Catherine of Siena. She has taught subjects related to economic ethics and the history of Christian social thought in several universities. She has served as consultant to the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. She is currently vice rector of the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome. She is the author of numerous publications on management theory and corporate social responsibility. Prof. Ugo Mattei is full Professor of Law at the University of Turin; and founder of the International University College of Turin, Italy. For his ground-breaking studies on the commons, Mattei won the Elinor Ostrom Award for the Collective Governance of the Commons in 2017. Mattei has published many books and over one hundred other publications. Mattei oriented the focus of his research on the study and practice of the commons after successfully masterminding a nation wide referendum (in 2011) against privatization of water in Italy. His Italian bestseller "Beni Comuni. Un Manifesto" has generated much attention throughout European social movements. The panel will be moderated by Patrick Kaczmarczyk who is currently an advisor to the economic forum of the German Social Democratic Party (SDP); and formerly worked as a consultant at UNCTAD. The webinar will entail a 15 minute presentation from each of the panel members followed by an opportunity for questions and answers with audience and between the panel members. Thereafter, there will be a follow up discussion session with the young scholars aimed at encouraging research collaboration among the young scholars; and discussing possible responses that will be compiled by the organising team in response to His Holiness Pope Francis' Questions.
