Introduction
Welcome to YSI States and Markets Working Group!
The States and Markets Working Group reconsiders the relationship between states and markets, including the idea that the State ‘intervenes’ in the economy, the concept of ‘the state’ and ‘the economy’ as two separate spheres, as well as additional categories such as ‘public’ and ‘private’.
Welcome to the “States and Market” YSI Working Group. We are glad you are interested in our work!
Our WG was born because we believe that current economics is not enough to deal with the main challenges of our present history.
Our initial aim was to study the economic fundamentals of modern national States (and nationalisms) through three main research lines:
- The study of nationalist speeches and practices associated to mid-XXth century totalitarian doctrines (especially nazism and fascism).
- The development of economic theory of capitalism’s transformations (and capitalist institutions’ transformations, in particular, national State) in the last 25 years.
- The renewal of the discussions on the validity of the following ideas:
a. State as “intervening” in the economy, considering both “the state” and “economy” as two separate spheres. b. Two types or models of State: the “liberal” (which does not “intervene” in the economy) and the “benefactor” (that does “intervene”). c. The division between developed and underdeveloped countries, where dependency is an economic relation between countries (and not, for instance, between capital enterprises). d. The division between “public” and “private” spheres.
With our WG we expect to develop theoretical discussions that can shed light to our present history and may led to new ways of strategic and programmatical thinking, putting into question the commonly accepted, established notions of our discipline, and challenging most conventional explanations.
We believe we should discuss the idea of the compatibility of capitalism with democracy.
We believe this research program is also political, since producing science, for us, is a key to produce a strategy towards an equal society that fulfils the failed? promises of the enlightenment: liberty, equality and fraternity for every human being!

Working Group News
Working Group news are the primary sources of information about what is happening in the working group. Working group news are used for important updates of relevance to the entire working group membership base, such as calls for registration, announcement of scholarships or similar.
News cannot be responded to, as it is not a conversational format - for this purpose, instead use the Working Group Discussion section!

Discussion
The discussion board is the main way for working group members to communicate and discuss relevant issues. The discussion topics can be about anything of relevance to the working group, such as ideas for projects, upcoming collaboration opportunities, and everything else related to the (potential) activities of the working group.
