Description

In the third webinar of the YSI IUC Web-Seminars in Law, Economics & Finance, Professor Pier Giuseppe Monateri from the University of Turin will reflect on his book, "Dominus Mundi" and apply it to the (post) pandemic framework.

Originally published in 2018, "Dominus Mundi" is a monograph that elaborates on the importance of Roman law in the development of political thought in Europe. The book explores the expression 'dominus mundi', as utilized in the texts of the medieval jurists, the political thought of Hobbes. Furthermore, the monograph rethinks contemporary political theory and the reappearance of the "Ghost of the Dominus Mundi" in the context of globalization, pinpointing the hetherodox origins of the sovereignty and the theory driving Agamben's "state of exception." In this webinar, Professor Monateri will reflect on the COVID-19 pandemic and the reemergence of the state of exception, exploring changes to the concept of the sovereign. Furthermore, in light of the pandemic, the global hegemony of science/medical and technology and its sources of legitimacy will be analyzed.
