During the off week, we discuss the 1977 John Hicks essay “Monetary Experience and the Theory of Money.”
From the essay:
It is less easy for us than it was in the days of Gold Standards, to think in terms of a world-wide monetary system; but some at least of the problems which concern us are world problems, so a closed-economy theory need not on that account be wholly out of date. Moderately, but continually, rising prices, with a high level of unemployment, were charac¬ teristic—on a world scale—of what has been called the Bretton Woods period, that lasted from some time in the 1950s to the dollar crisis of 1971; a much more rapid inflation of prices, with much worse employment, has been characteristic—again on a world scale—of what has happened since. Why did prices behave as they did during the Bretton Woods period? and why has there been the subsequent acceleration? Why have there been these changes in employment behaviour?
The essay appears in Hicks’s 1977 book, Economic Perspectives: Further Essays on Money and Growth.
