Description

About the series:

This series bridges the gap between academia and policymaking in Latin America. We invite you to join us live and hear politicians or policymakers talk about their concrete experiences in the design and implementation of STI and development policy. By analysing and contrasting those experiences, what has worked and what has not, we aim to derive lessons for future interventions in the region. The underlying motivation is to open windows of curiosity and future engagement possibilities in young researchers, thus breaking up the non-sensical, harmful, and wasteful barriers between the academic world and that of policy and public service

Coming up:
1. Matías Kulfas (in Spanish) – Políticas para el desarrollo productivo y tecnológico en una economía inestable. El caso argentino.
Former Argentine Minister of Productive Development, and now Professor at the Universidad Nacional de San Martín, Kulfas will discuss his experience as both an academic and policymaker in the Argentine context of productive development and technology policy. Please note this event will be in Spanish only.

Format: A 90-minute webinar interview, hosted by Prof Carlota Pérez with the participation of Prof. João Carlos Ferraz and open to post-graduate students and early career researchers. After the invited speakers make their reflections, the virtual floor is open for discussion.

Past episodes:
  1. Javiera Petersen | Deputy Minister of Economy, Chile (view recording)
  2. Mariana Mazzucato | Founding Director of the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (view recording)
  3. Luciano Coutinho | Former President of the Brazilian Development Bank (view recording)
  4. Francisco Sagasti | Former President of Peru (view recording)
About the STI and Development Policy Experiences in Latin America & the Caribbean:

This series is a collaboration between the Latin American & the Caribbean STI and Development Discussion Group (LA-STID) and the Economics of Innovation Working Group of the Young Scholars Initiative. The LA-STID has been bringing together young researchers since 2018 to discuss with experts their experiences as lecturers, researchers and policy practitioners in science technology, innovation and productive development policies.

This initiative was designed by Prof. Carlota Pérez (IIPP/UCL, UK, SPRU, Univ. of Sussex, and TalTech, Estonia), who later engaged Prof. João Carlos Ferraz (IE/UFRJ, Brazil) to discuss with students and young researchers the importance of considering a policymaking career or to make sure that they maintain contact with policymakers in their countries, rather than remain isolated in Academia.
