Description

Since 2021, the Sustainability Research & Innovation Congress (SRI) has brought together global leaders in research, government, civil society, and business to advance progress towards sustainability. The SRI Congress offers an exceptionally inclusive and inspiring global platform for co-creating state-of-the-art solutions and innovations and building a coalition of the willing to achieve a sustainability transformation. SRI is co-convened by Future Earth and the Belmont Forum with local co-organizers.

On the other hand, the SRI 2024 Africa satellite event, which will be a mixture of cross-cutting plenary sessions, parallel thematic sessions, and live discussion tables, will showcase the richness of African perspectives in sustainability science and innovation and bring together research and innovation communities to share successes, build collaborations, and work across disciplines and sectors to support a global transformation to sustainability in Africa

Hence, the YSI Workshop, a component of this year’s congress, aims to gather members of the Young Scholars Initiative (YSI) from South Africa, centering around the theme “Reconciling Conservation and Socio-Economic Development in Africa.” The workshop will feature speakers from Southern African institutions, enriching the discussion.

The YSI workshop is scheduled to take place on May 22nd from 1:45 PM to 3:15 PM(local time) in Room D at the Southern Sun Elangeni (Hotel).

The confirmed speakers include:

  1. Dr. Felix Kwabena Donkor, University of Education, Winneba – Ghana.
  2. Mr. Abubakar Hadisu Bello, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg – South Africa.
  3. Ms. Morakane Madiba, Rhodes University/Uhuru Career Guidance & Learning, Grahamstown/Pretoria – South Africa.
  4. Ms. Meisie Rasakanya, University of Pretoria, Pretoria – South Africa.
  5. Ms. Kgadi Seabi, University of Pretoria, Pretoria – South Africa.
  6. Dr. Peter Uledi, University of the Free State, Harare – Zimbabwe.

The workshop aims to establish a partnership between the YSI Africa working group and Future Earth, the organizer of SRI. This partnership seeks to ensure that YSI workshops are conducted at all future Africa Satellite Events of SRI.

This year’s event will adopt a Hub meeting format, and YSI members based in South Africa who are interested in attending the workshop in Durban are encouraged to participate.

Please note that attendees, excluding the invited speakers, are responsible for arranging their own travel and accommodation. However, catering will be provided for all participants during the workshop. Additionally, members interested in attending the entire SRI Africa Satellite Event must register at https://sricongress.org/sri2024-africa-satellite-event/ and pay the registration fee.

The SRI Africa satellite event will be held from May 21st to 24th at Southern Sun Elangeni in Durban, South Africa.
