Description

Since the foundation of the Brazilian Society for Ecological Economics-ECOECO in 1994, its mission has been the diffusion and construction of ecological economics in Brazil, through the integration of its associates and among counterparts from other countries. ECOECO aims to promote an approach between studies and research in the field of ecological economics with strategies and policies for sustainability management within the public sector (local, regional and national), the private sector (companies and business associations) and non-governmental organizations.
In 2023, celebrating its thirty years of existence, the bi-annual Meeting of the ECOECO is being planned under the issue of “Challenges and routes for an economy of sociobiodiversity in the Amazon ", and we believe that the technical-scientific scope is fully aligned with YSI’s institutional mission. In this sense, it should be noted that ecological economics is also shaped by critical ways of thinking about the economy.

The Amazon is characterized as much by its great biological diversity and importance for climate regulation, as by its great cultural and social diversity. A prosperous economy for the region must be based on valuing biodiversity and recognizing the traditions of local populations, whose ways of life are based on a more harmonious relationship with nature. The Meeting seeks to contribute to the debate on the paths and challenges for building this socio-biodiversity economy.

  • How to reduce the social vulnerability of the region based on biodiversity and the forest stand?
  • How can the knowledge and culture of local populations form the basis for development?
  • How to rethink the infrastructure in the region?
  • What is the role of Universities, researchers and governments?
  • What is the role of the private sector?

The purpose of the workshop is to present YSI and the YSI Sustainability Working and also giving young scholars the oportunity to present their ongoing research to the ECOECO community with feedbacks from Professor Roldan Muradian (President of the International Society of Ecological Economics and Professor at Fluminense Federal University, Brazil). The YSI workshop will happen one day before the Conference Opening session. .
