Description

Join the YSI Gender and Sustainability working group for a half-day, in-person Meet and Greet at Baze University Abuja. This gathering will be a side event hosted alongside activities for the 2024 Tech Community Impact Week.  The Tech Community Impact Week includes Women in Tech visiting from Silicon Valley in the US to Nigeria between March 2-9 2024.

Background

Many evidence-based studies have highlighted that gender equality and environmental goals are mutually reinforcing. Women play a crucial role in the future of sustainability.

According to Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, gendered perspectives of investing in women make for smart economics, and investing in girls is even smarter. In the same vein, the OECD has published several documents to show that women experience differentiated effects from environmental factors and are often most affected by environmental degradation due to socio-economic and discriminatory factors. At the same time, women express more “green” attitudes in their personal choices and could greatly contribute to the transition to a low-carbon economy.

It is against the background of these topics that we are organizing a Meet and Greet at the Tech Community Impact Week. Those interested in exploring the role of women in the green economy via the community of the Young Scholars Initiative are invited to attend. Our gathering will feature:

An introduction to gender economics in sustainability

We will focus on the unique roles that women–especially in global south countries–can play as the world transitions to a low carbon economy. Topics of discussion will include:

    1. Why gender is important for all the Sustainable Development Goals.
    2. Why young people (especially young scholars!) are important stakeholders in the global effort to achieve these goals
    3. How to adopt a gender inclusive approach toward circular economy
    4. How to think about bridging knowledge and research gaps for Sustainability Transition (ST) research, most of which lacks a conceptualization of gender as a key factor of societal change
    5. Gender blind technology as well as gender blind approaches used in developing solutions
