“The relationship between economics and philosophy throughout the history of economic thought”

The Université TÉLUQ and Centre interdisciplinaire de recherche sur la science et la technologie (CIRST) are jointly organizing Charles Gide Workshops 2019.
The theme of the 2019 Charles Gide Workshop is “Evolution of the disciplinary boundaries of economics with other sciences”. The workshop will take place in Montréal (Canada), from June 25th to 27th, 2019.
Information about the Charles Gide Workshop can be found in this link: https://gide2019.teluq.ca/en/.

As the 2019 Charles Gide Workshop is closely linked to the plural views and multidisciplinary perspectives pursued by the Young Scholars Initiative (YSI), we are glad to announce the call for abstracts for one special event organized by States and Markets YSI Working Group at this excellent and stimulating Workshop.
Writings from Undergraduate, master and PhD students, as well as young scholars working looking forward to relating economics with other sciences and philosophy are welcome.

The topic of the special event is “the relationship between economics and philosophy throughout the history of economic thought”.
The aim of the special event is to discuss, rediscover and reelaborate on big theoretical debates about this relationship that were abandoned and remained outside the boundaries of nowadays economics, such as:

  1. The role of political economy in the 18th century enlightenment philosophical project, especially throughout the work of Scottish moral philosophers such as Adam Smith and David Hume
  2. The role of political economy in the 19th century “identity crisis of philosophy”, especially:
    a) Marx´s attempt to develop political economy in order to complete its critique to Hegelian philosophy;
    b) the older German historical school of economics´ attempt to create a Nationalökonomie in order to critique enlightened political economy;
    c) the Methodenstreit
  3. The role of economics in the 20th century “split” between natural sciences (Naturwissenschaften) and sciences of spirit (Geisteswissenschaften), and between analytic vs. continental philosophy

Abstracts should be written in English and have a maximum of 2000 characters. Please submit your abstract through this form:
