CfP: Understanding Economic Theory and Development in a Sraffian Framework

The Economic Development Working Group of the Young Scholars Initiative (YSI) of the Institute for New economic Thinking (INET) is organizing a two-days long workshop, titled "Understanding Economic Theory and Development in a Sraffian Framework". The conference is being organized in partnership with Hyderabad Central University and Azim Premji University, India.

The sub-themes of the conference are as follows:

(i) Sraffa’s contributions to the field of economic theory, notably, value theory and capital theory;
(ii) the influence of Sraffa’s work on applied political economy, particularly in the developing countries; and
(iii) its relevance for enhancing our understanding of the path of economic development in developing economies.

This workshop aims to provide a platform for Masters’ and PhD students with these interests to present their work, obtain feedback from senior scholars, and to obtain an understanding of the frontiers of the Sraffian research programme. The Workshop will also invite a set of senior scholars who will deliver lectures on the theme of the workshop and engage with the young scholars. The workshop is particularly directed towards researchers and students with an interest in classical political economy (CPE), history of economic thought, and economic development from a CPE perspective.

Format of the workshop
The workshop will comprise of a set of plenary talks by invited scholars and a set of presentation sessions for young scholars to present their work based on the theme and obtain valuable feedback from the senior scholars.

Important dates
• Deadline for initial paper submission: 1st March 2020. Both full papers and Initial drafts will be considered.
If submitting initial drafts, please provide a good roadmap of how the project will be developed. The Initial drafts should be no less than 5000 words. If selected, full articles must be submitted by the deadline for full paper submission.
All papers must include an abstract of no more than 500 words.
• Acceptances: 15th April 2020.
• Deadline for full papers: 30th May 2020 (The provision of travel support and accommodation is conditional on the submission of full paper).

Application for young scholars
10 young scholars will be selected in response to a call for papers.

Venue:
The conference will be conducted in Hyderabad Central University, Hyderabad, India.

Stay for 3 nights
Accommodation will be offered to the selected young scholars

Limited travel stipends available for young scholars based within India
