New Economic Questions! Early application for the YSI Plenary 2020

Deadline: March 5, 2020

What are the important economic questions of our time?

This year, YSI has embarked on a new challenge: to determine the research questions of our community. Join us in this process by submitting the question you find most interesting before March 5, 2020. If your question makes it to the next round, you will be offered an “early bird” travel stipend to the YSI Plenary in Budapest! The final set of questions will be incorporated into the working group mandates, feature prominently on the YSI website, and come to serve as inspiration for YSI projects around the world.

Why Questions?

As the next generation of economic thinkers, we know we face different societal challenges than our predecessors. We realize the predominant economic methods were not developed in response to today’s challenges of climate change, inequality, and financial instability. That’s why, in YSI, we have always let our questions–not a specific method–drive us in our work. And this year, we are challenging ourselves to lay all those questions out. Together, we will develop a comprehensive overview of the questions that inspire new economic thinking.

How to get involved?

Come up with the question you think is interesting or important for the YSI community to address and submit it before March 5! We are currently soliciting question-suggestions from all members of YSI. Each question submitted should be accompanied by a statement of up to 150 words that motivates the question. You should not attempt to answer the question; instead, argue why it is a good question to ask. See some example questions here!

What will happen after you submit?

The questions collected will be reviewed by a team of INET economists; a selected subset will be announced on March 20, for us to think about in more detail. The summer will serve as a period of exploration for these questions, with a culmination at the 2020 Plenary. There, we will collaborate to determine a final set of five questions for each YSI working group.

Those final questions will be incorporated into the working group mandates, feature prominently on the YSI website, and come to serve as inspiration for YSI projects around the world. The questions will connect projects, people, and working groups, thus allowing our efforts to converge. At the same time, they will ensure that we stay true to the YSI spirit as our community grows, by making sure we let our work be guided by our questions, not by a specific analytical toolkit.
