Hi all –
In collaboration with the Sustainability working group, we are co-hosting a debate at the First Annual North-South Degrowth Conference in Mexico City, September 4-6, 2018.
The deadline to submit our final topic is July 22nd. If you are interested in planning with us, please let me know ASAP. If you would simply like to attend the conference, registration is open until July 31st. It is 100 euros for students. The main theme is the "decolonization of the social imaginary", with the following thematic axes: survival, culture, and wealth.
About our proposed debate:
Considering the pros and cons of different approaches to combating the increasing marginal utility of money. In light of the north-south theme of the conference, potentially highlighting ways to keep wealth in the global south.
Main question: how does the following financial approach aid the degrowth movement, specifically in terms of decreasing wealth inequality and ecological damage? We are planning to select one of the following topics, which must de decided on by July 22. We could potentially compare two to each other instead.
1) local currencies
2) negative interest rates
3) public money
Proposed structure: Debate format in which we invite people at the conference to participate with some notice. We will moderate the debate and a prep session (roughly 40 minutes) for both sides to prepare their arguments.
Desired outcome(s): Create a participatory and engaging space that invites conference goers to share their own experiences and learn from each other.
Think critically about the process by which the degrowth movement is growing and gaining a reputation globally & discuss some of the degrowth proposal regarding the distribution of wealth and attempts of redefining wealth.
Please let me know your interest and any input about the debate topic as soon as possible. If you are interested in attending the conference, make sure to register on the degrowth site before July 31st.
