On 8th November, 2016, in a televised address the Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, declared that the hereto prevalent high value denomination notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 would cease to be legal tender with effect from midnight. These notes were to be replaced with new notes of 500 and 2000 denominations. The three-fold objectives stated in the government notification are to put an end to cash hoarding, flush out fake currency notes and, in effect, also bring an end to the "financing [of] subversive activities such as drug trafficking and terrorism." This webinar will consider issues around demonetization – the currency experiment that has drastically affected the Indian society and economy.

Some of the following issues will be discussed:
1. The stated purpose of demonetization, its logic and the fallacies of the argument
2. Implementation issues
3. The immediate effects on citizens
4. Economic impacts, short term and medium term, including fiscal implications
5. The effect on banking
6. What can be done to stem corruption and "black money"?
