Description

The Young Scholars Initiative’s Complexity Economics Working Group (YSI – CEWG) and Latin America Working Group (YSI – LAWG) in partnership with the Science and Policy Research Unit (SPRU) of the University of Sussex Business School invite PhD students to submit their extended abstracts to the first Young Scholars Initiative (YSI) Workshop at the 2019 European Meeting on Applied Evolutionary Economics (EMAEE). The workshop will take place at the same venue as EMAEE on June 6, following the end of the conference.

PhD students are invited to also apply to present a paper in the EMAEE conference (June 3-5) and to participate in the YSI workshop that will follow the conference on June 6th. To apply for the EMAEE (deadline on March 10th, 10AM GMT) and for more information about the conference please follow the link here: http://www.sussex.ac.uk/spru/newsandevents/events/emaee2019.

Please also note that the International J.A. Schumpeter Society offers a prize of €1000 to young scholars for the best paper on innovation related to the conference topics. In addition, the European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy (EAEPE) offers a prize of €1000 to young scholars for the best paper on the political economy related to the conference topics.

The YSI workshop on Artificial Intelligence will bring together PhD students and senior experts working on issues related to the economics of artificial intelligence and other topics of the main EMAEE conference. We will invite a selected number of EMAEE keynote speakers to organise at least one short lecture and two open discussions. The discussion sessions will focus on promoting creative debates between PhD students about a proposed topic. The main objective of the workshop will be to build linkages among scholars and to provide students with ideas to carry on their research in a friendly and stimulating environment, with the presence and inputs of some senior scholars.

The deadline for applications to the YSI workshop is 01/04/2019. Please note that this is different from the deadline for applications for the EMAEE, which is 10/03/2019, 10AM GMT. This is because participation in the YSI workshop is also open for young scholars not presenting at the EMAEE.

Participation in the workshop and at EMAEE are free of charge and meals will be provided to all successful applicants. A limited amount of travel stipends is also available to participants not receiving any travel support from other sources. Interested PhD students should submit their motivation letter (max 500 words) in English informing about their reasons to participate in EMAEE and the YSI Workshop, together with their extended abstracts and their resource needs. The applications will be evaluated based on both documents.

Please also note that only limited resources are available; the funding will most likely be partial and accepted participants should prepare to cover part of their travel, accommodation and meal expenses outside conference main events. In case of acceptance, the organizers will contact with details about amount granted.
