Description

Mainstream economics has lost touch with the history and philosophy of economics. This is most palpable in the economics curricula across the world. Although criticisms of mainstream economics had been advanced by economists such as John Maynard Keynes, Piero Sraffa and Joan Robinson, it is only after the 2007 Global Financial Crises that students and teachers explicitly gathered together to put forward the demand of a pluralist economics curriculum that values the history and philosophy of economics.

Philosophy of economics is a very understudied field of economics. While many aspects may be covered, since this is perhaps the first ever workshop devoted to the history and philosophy of economics in India, the following sub-themes will be explored: (i) India’s economic philosophy, (ii) philosophy of economic concepts, (iii) individuals and their economic philosophy, (iv) schools of thought and their economic philosophy, and (v) philosophy of economics vis-a-vis related disciplines.

Against this backdrop, this workshop will expose not only students but also teachers to various aspects of the philosophy of economics. Just like the potential audience, the speakers will be drawn from diverse backgrounds, including academics from outside the discipline of economics.

In the spirit of equity and inclusion, of the 35 participants, at least 25 seats will be for students. Moreover, of the 35 participants, 30 will be from the North-East region and the surrounding states of Bihar and West Bengal. The selected participants will receive travel stipends, shared accommodation and food.
