Description
YSI Gender and Economics WG @ IAFFE 2024:
Pre-Conference and Panel “Feminist economics and the crisis of democracy: young scholar’s insights”
The 2024 IAFFE Conference at the Sapienza university in Rome aspires to provoke critical reflection on feminist economics responses to the present and imaginations of the future. This year, we especially encourage debates on the following questions:
- What are the contributions of feminist economics to interpreting the current global landscape of multiple intertwined crises and rapid technological change?
- Where do women stand in their heterogeneous identities, as subjects and agents in the crisis of democracy, polarization and rising authoritarianism?
- What are the forward-looking strategies, concrete solutions and models that emerge from feminist economics towards reaping the benefits of technological change for all towards an egalitarian, sustainable and resilient economic order?
- To what extent does feminist economics carry the potential to provide an ideological home to women, younger generations and others who wish to see progressive policies?
This year YSI Gender and Economics Working Group will be present at the pre-conference on July-2 and with a panel during the conference that will take place between July-3 to July-5, both events designed to provide an opportunity for young scholars to present their work (papers, drafts and work in progress document; we are also keen on alternative formats such as videos, posters, etc) and discuss it among peers in a forum which brings together young and senior feminist scholars from around the world.
We invite all young researchers who might be interested in presenting a contribution to any of these events to apply by submitting an abstract (300 words max).
During the Pre-Conference young researchers will have the opportunity to briefly present their work in a poster session in a walking gallery that would gather many IAFFE members with whom to interact and discuss the work before the main panel of the day. We welcome contributions of young creative scholars that would like to present a snapshot of their research on feminist economics and create diverse networks.
After that, during the conference, YSI Gender and Economics Working Group will host a Workshop called “Feminist economics and the crisis of democracy: young scholar’s insights” where young researchers would also have the opportunity to present their work in a panel discussion. This workshop seeks to generate intergenerational, interdisciplinary and interregional networks to share lessons learned about how feminist economics contributes to more equal and democratic societies and will also count on the presence of a senior scholar to guide and enrich the conversation from an experienced perspective on the field. With that in mind we welcome contributions from scholars of different disciplines and young economists with diverse career paths in advocacy and policy making dealing with the above questions in their academic development.
As this is an in-person only event and, to encourage young scholars and early careers participation, some selected participants, prioritizing those based in the region, could be eligible for financial support for travel and accommodation during the conference. Please indicate the need for funding in the application. Note that acceptance of a proposal does not imply a funding commitment and that the stipends could only be used for travel expenses but do not cover the registration fees that each participant should afford on their own.
