Description

Just over a decade ago, the global economy was plunged into its worse crisis since the Great Depression. Today, the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the already long-standing tension between the US and Chinese states have disrupted global value chains and fostered price increases throughout developed economies. Lingering in the background of all this is the ecological crisis, which represents perhaps the gravest threat ever faced by humanity.
What these repeated crises demonstrate is the interconnectedness of our world. The outbreak of a virus, a stock market crash, a war conflict or the melting of polar icecaps start locally, but their consequences are felt globally. What these repeated crises also demonstrate is how politics and economics can only be understood together, as two inseparable dimensions of global capitalism.
In this context, the following years are crucial. Although there are no magic bullets, young scholars can contribute to framing and developing an academic agenda engaged with building an alternative future. To that end, last December, YSI members living in the UK met for a one-day workshop to discuss pressing political economy issues and share our recent research outputs.

To that end, on December 2021, YSI members living in the UK met for a one-day workshop to discuss pressing political economy issues and share our recent research outputs. Since then we have been meeting regularly to share our ongoing research and co-create YSI projects. This is our second workshop of the 2023-24 academic year.
