The Finance, Law, and Economics (FLE) Working Group invites you to the 2017 Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET) Young Scholars Initiative (YSI) Festival. The event will take place in Edinburgh on 19 – 20 October, 2017 and will comprise several workshop sessions. It will be followed by the INET Plenary Conference on 21 – 23 October, which you are also invited to attend.
We welcome contributions by young scholars who wish to present their work during the corresponding session of the Festival on the following topics:
Banking Regulation:
Legal scholars and practitioners are especially encouraged to submit their abstracts to discuss European and international banking regulation issues (e.g. US, China). This session will be held together with the Financial Stability Working Group to facilitate interdisciplinary exchange. If your paper addresses this theme from a non-legal / non-policy perspective, we invite you to submit the abstract to the Financial Stability WG directly.
Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
- Regulation arising from direct and indirect banking supervision
- Latest updates about the Basel IV regulations and effects
- Updates on the final papers and drafts arising from CRD V and CRR II
- Banking regulation in the context of the Trump Administration and Brexit
- Interaction between macroprudential policy, microprudential policy, monetary policy, and fiscal policy
- Government and regulatory authorities’ role in designing relevant policies and communicating them to the public
- Shadow banking: legal tools and institutional setup to address this issue
Fintech / Cryptocurrencies:
Legal scholars and practitioners are especially encouraged to submit their abstracts to discuss the law and policy arising from the development of financial technology (FinTech). This session will be held together with the Innovation Working Group and the Financial Stability Working Group to facilitate interdisciplinary exchange. If your paper addresses this theme from a non-legal / non-policy perspective, we invite you to submit the abstract to the Innovation WG and the Financial Stability WG directly.
Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
- Legal and regulatory developments responding to innovations in FinTech (e.g. blockchain, digital currencies, payments systems, smart contracts, and crypto-property)
* Issues regarding case law, legislation, and national / international regulatory policy * Theoretical developments and legal certainty * Questions regarding the nature and definition of intangible property rights * Role of central banks and governments

We host monthly webinar sessions with leading scholars and have more than 200 active members from undergraduate to post-doctoral level. The last WG annual meeting was fully funded and hosted at the European Parliament in Brussels.
